Moving a single musical instrument from one place to another should not present too much of a problem, unless it is something like a piano or organ, but if you are not moving the instrument yourself, you may want to pack it up so that it arrives in one piece at the other end of its journey. If you have several musical instruments or if they are particularly valuable, you may want to think about using a specialist packing or moving company to do the job for you. If you want to save money, then the following are some tips given below which may help you pack your beloved instrument(s) safely in self storage in Canton Ohio.

Plan before you pack

Every good move starts with a plan, so if you do have to pack your own instrument, what you use and how you arrange the packing will depend on what exactly you are packing. Some instruments are much more sensitive than others; some are much smaller than others. Every instrument should be packed individually so that its particular requirements are catered for.

Climate control

Some musical instruments are best stored at a certain temperature and humidity level. If you are going to pack, move or store instruments that you know are sensitive to these climatic conditions it may be best to use a professional agent to do the job. Just make sure that they are used to packing and moving these types of instruments. The same applies to self storage. Find out if the self storage facility has a stable, maintained climate control so that your sensitive wooden instrument in particular is well catered for. Also, remember that any instrument  that is being unpacked for use later on may need retuning and a certain amount of time to reacclimatize back to normal working temperatures again.

One instrument at a time

Even if you have a number of smaller musical instruments, it is best to pack them individually. Large instruments, like drums or pianos, will also have to be packed individually or at least moved around with as much protective adding or packaging material wrapped around them as possible

Use a purpose made container if available

Most musical instruments, apart from some larger ones, should have their own box or container in which they are normally stored. These are the best things to pack them into when they must be moved long distance or stored too. Each instrument should be surrounded by as much loose crumpled up paper or bubble wrap as can fit around it so that it does not move around inside the box and sensitive parts are particularly well protected.

When there is no container

If your instrument or instruments do not have their own purpose built container or box, use one that is just a little larger than the instrument itself so that when it is wrapped up in bubble wrap or crumpled up paper, it cannot slide around or move inside the box.

String instruments

If you have a string instrument, like a guitar or violin, loosen off the strings before wrapping the instrument up and putting it back in its box.

Brass instruments

These may seem more robust than many other instruments, but if there is anything that can be easily dismantled like a mouthpiece, it is wise to remove it before packing.

Large items

Large instruments like pianos or drum sets may not fit into a box, but it is possible that they can be dismantled safely before protecting them with padding. Secure anything that is potentially loose, like lids and pedals, with tape and wrap the whole instrument with old blankets or bubble wrap.
